FMP - Jewellery Brand - Evaluation

(Author's own photo)

Overall in my fmp I felt that I created the type of brand that i set out to. Looking at it all on my board i was proud with what i had achieved and managed to create more than i had hoped for, which was a plus. I was also very surprised with my tie management as this was something that i was worried i would struggle with, which i did, however i expected it to be worse.

I think my development skills were good as normally i struggle with this and go for the first idea i have as i think i will run out of time, however i used a range of materials, started off with small sketches and drawings and then developed ones that i liked into larger ideas and added colour. This was something that i had learnt to do throughout my previous projects and it definitely helped me choose my final logo as i had been able to adapt it and get it exactly how i wanted it.

However to improve this i could have tried a wider range of materials to eliminate every possible idea so that i was 100% sure, although my final design was exactly how i pictured it.

I think to improve my research i could have possible gone to a jewellery class if i had planned my time better and used my makings as part of my display to make my product come to life. I think i would have also enjoyed this as a hobby, so if i had planned my times better i could have done this. Also for my research i could have found more contextual artists which i really struggles with however i managed to find illustrators that inspired my work which i will now look at on other occasions.

I was really please with my use of software as i had never used illustrator before and i managed to use this a lot in the creating of my text and font. This was very good as it made my work look more professional and make the text be unique to my brand. This also made my ring designs computerised so that i could adapt them to the way i wanted. I also developed my photoshop skills whilst making my coloured background as i had never used these filters and they gave me the exact look i was going for.

Overall I was very pleased with my brand and i think that if i had more time i could have added a lot more to it such as a full website that could have possibly become up and running and created some real life jewellery to go with my display. I was happy with my packaging as i tried and tested it and it worked in real life and  i feel my designs and sketchbook work portray the kind of company i wanted to create. Throughout the graphic pathway i have learned skills and techniques that i will use throughout all of my work now and since i had never experienced graphics before i am very happy with the work i have produced and very glad that i have learnt graphics for this year.

FMP - Jewellery Brand - Development Changes

After completing a lot of my designs and printing them i decided that the dark blue colour was too dark and made the text difficult to era on a lot of the things i had made. I then decided to start again with the background colour and look at some of the other combinations that i had create and chose a slightly lighter combination with more green incorporated. This was a bump in the road for me as a lot of my things were completed however after evaluation my work i think this colour works a lot better and I'm glad that i changed my products.

Here i added more green to the combination and made the blue a turquiose.

FMP - Jewellery Brand - Business Card

I decided to create some business cards that could go in with my packaging. This could also be handed out to customers who come into the shop ect. Again i didn't want normal rectangle shaped that have been used before so i decided to stick to the shape of my logo and brochure. On the front of the business card i would have my logo then when the card was reversed there would be the title 'carina' with the address of the store, contact number, name, job role, email and website.

Designing the business cards was pretty easy as there is a way in which a business card has to be layer out to look professional and to make sure all of the necessary info is included. I did do some research on business cards that already existed and this helped me with my layout.

(Author's own photo)

(Author's own photo)

I used the same colour as all of my previous products so that everything matched. I create the 'carina' text first by hand drawing and transferring the photo onto illustrator and image tracing it. I wanted this at the top as this is the name of the brand and also then the logo is not over used.

Here i added the information required. I had my name, email and job role on the left, which would be adapted for each person and the shop information on the right. This was a layout that was popular in my research.

FMP - Jewellery Brand - Ring designs

I wanted to have some ring designs displayed on my website and possibly brochure so that the customers could see what jewellery my brand had. Also if i had more time during fop i would have attempted to make little prototype rings to display on my final display. This was a shame that i ran out of time do i did detailed drawings to display instead. Here i have done basic side and front views of some rings to show what gemstones that i would use.

(Author's own photo)

(Author's own photo)

Here i drew some of the rings in colour with felt tip to make them more realistic. I wanted my rings to be dress jewellery so a lot of the designs are chunky with a lot of details and big gemstones. I decided in my drawings only to use diamonds, blue sapphires, emeralds, pearls and opals as all of these held the colour of the ocean. Also the yellow represents yellow gold which the ring would be set in.

I drew a selection of rings at all angles and photographed them for my display to show my products. I was really happy with my drawings as they portrayed the high end value that i wanted them too.

I then attempted to image trace some of my drawings on illustrator for my website. I thought this would have made the drawings look more professional and stand out better on the front page of my website. This was a technique i had never used before so was pleased that during my fmp i managed to gain skills in another area of software.

Research

To inspire my rings designs i looked at designers that already existed in the industry.  I found high end and some not as much, but wanted to see how the expensive and rare gemstones were portrayed on their websites.

Amidon Jewellery
Maeve

Scottish designer for engagement rings. This helped me see the elegance of the designs and the language used to describe the rings.

Theo Fennell

Imaginative high end jewellery.
This allowed me to see unique designs that incorporated under the sea and showed me the colours used that i could consider in my designs.

Tatty Devine

Highstreet jewellery with a deep sea treasure collection.
This had branding techniques to it as i could see the colours used and how the theme under the sea was used on a website and how the products linked to the theme.

Phillippe Cramer

Artist who has a collection of under the sea type jewellery.
The shapes that were used to highlight the theme under the sea helped me design rings that were different to your everyday ring.

Lili Jewellery

A high end diamond specialist brand that started in 2004.
This brand showed my exquisite designs that were thoroughly detailed and high end. Also the shaped helped me with my designs and technical drawing.

Ebb and Flo sea glass jewellery

The colours in the photographs gave me ideas on how to display my drawings for my website and brochure.

Chopard premier red carport jewellery cannes
This campaign helped me in my technical drawing and inspired me to show different angles of the ring to make them more realistic.

Overall my research defiately helped inspire my drawings and taught me some technical tricks that i never knew. I am not very confident with drawing anyway but the shapes of other peoples drawings helped lead me on the right track to the rings i drew. The colours of some the artists also helped me with the picking of what stones i should use in my drawings.

FMP - Jewellery Brand - Packaging

My packaging was important to me as this is something that creates a lasting impression to the customer as this is what they take home. Also this is what can be recognised as if the customer walks around with the beg for example, a certain design or colour could be something that people recognise and associate with my brand.

(Author's own photo)

As my focus is on rings i needed to create a ring box and a carrier bag. Again i didn't want the standard square ring box that open up and down, but something more unusual and magical. I drew out some cube nets to help me adapt them into something that i liked. After trying out a few designs and testing then i decided to go for a square base and sides but have my logo at the top and intertwine the top so that it hooked. This was my logo was incorporated at the top and it was something different.

(Author's own photo)

This was a quick mock up of what i was thinking for my jewellery box. This design wasn't to scale but gave me a rough idea how my box would look. I still needed to make the edges taller and see how my logo looked on the top of the box.
(Author's own photo)

This is how to box would look at the top and you would unhook the top and the edges fall down which would then display the ring sitting on a ring cushion which is attached inside.

(Author's own photo)

I then edited the box shape on photoshop and chose a background colour for the box. I wanted to box to be coloured as i decided to have my bags plain so this way they weren't both too heavy in colour. I logo fitted well on the top of the box and i was able to have the logo on each size which again highlighted symmetry between all of my designs.

(Author's own photo)

This was my box folded and constructed together which i was extremely happy with as it is different to anything that i have seen at a jewellery store and hold the magical effect when you open it of what is inside as it doesn't look like a traditional ring box.

(Author's own photo)

I wanted my bags to be ordinary card bags that folded flat and had handles. My handles would have blue ribbon to highlight the luxurious feel and my logo out also be visible. I would also create stickers in the shape of my logo to seal that bag together at the top which would be transparent.
I drew a few ideas together to see what worked well. I like the idea of having the logo repeated but i thought this could have looked too cluttered.

(Author's own photo)

I experimented with different colours and patterns on photoshop of the 4 designs that I liked. I liked that plain background the best with the black logo as this was simple and elegant and i felt the other colours took away from the logo. I would have two sizes of bag, small and large, both the same and with the same ribbon and stickers to accompany.
(Author's own photo)

My favourite designs of colour.

(Author's own photo)

I thought this combination was too dark and the colours didn't flow, which made the bag look seperated.

(Author's own photo)

I was happy with my packaging as i do not think i could have made it more complicated as i wanted simple packaging. I decided to change the colours however in my development changes post to the lighter colours as i think they worked better and fitted in with the other changes that i had made. Also once i had printed this dark colour it didn't look how i wanted it to.

FMP - Jewellery Brand - Brochure

I wanted to create a brochure for my brand to explain to customers about the high end jewels that would be used in my products. This would be something that could be added in the bag when someone had bought something, or as a handy info leaflet for people passing and wanted to find out some info. I wanted info the was easy to understand and just gave you the basics on that particular gemstone.

For my brochure I looked at some that were from a high end jewellers in my local town. I saw how there was a colour theme involved and it helped me to see what kind of font size and spacing and layout was used. I wanted my brochure to be a different shape from the  others as a rectangle is so common.

(Author's own photo)

I did some rough drawings of brochures that could work and showed how they would fold and open. I liked the idea of having a round brochure or something that had to be folded down the way.

(Author's own photo)

(Author's own photo)

The info was from what I knew about particular stone and also some information for high end jewellers. I only did 5 stones as these were the only stones that were used in the under the sea collection, however with different collections there would be different leaflets on the other stones that could be used.

(Author's own photo)

(Author's own photo)

For my font I hand drew the letters and image traced them on illustrator.  I then added the letters together on photoshop and adjusted the size to fit the brochure.

(Author's own photo)

I liked the idea of having the shape of my brochure in the shape of my logo as then this was different and my brand would be carried throughout all of my products. This was a quick sketch of how i wanter it to look.
(Author's own photo)

Photoshop

My experimenting on photoshop with text and what size to have it. I wanted it big enough so that it was clear but didn't want the whole brochure once folded bigger than a5 really. I found the text difficult to make readable as it is a fancy font some of the letters are hard to ready so I had to adapt the text quiet a lot which I found a struggle as it worked on paper but on computer it was more difficult.
(Author's own photo)

(Author's own photo)

This was a quick mock up of the colour and background that I wanted. Although this was a sunset i thought it looked eye-catching however I knew this would be confusing for the whole brand so went to the colour that had  been used for the logo so that everything matched.  I also wasted to add a photo at the bottom however I used so much text that there wasn't enough space and I couldn't make the text smaller as then it would have been too difficult to read. Also I wanted to have my own photos in the brochure however I didn't obviously have the rings that I wanted to be able to shoot them and put them in. This could have been something that I could have done if I had more time.

(Author's own photo)

(Author's own photo)

This was my brochure flat and it would all fold into each other and unfold. The colour once I had printed it was took dark and too hard to read so I had to change this in my development changes post.
(Author's own photo)

My brochure folded.

(Author's own photo)

All together I think the brochure was a useful tool that I created as it gave the customer info that could be taken away as a reminder of the brand and also explained the type of company that we are with high end gemstones. The colour and font was the hardest part of this brochure and i really struggled making the headings look good and be readable which took a lot of time that i didn't expect. However I was glad that i managed to over come this and get something that i was happy with .
