For our starter activity we did a series of drawings to show us how anything can turn into an idea. This was extremely helpful for me as I find generating lots of ideas at once hard, so this portrayed to me how I can use different shapes and objects to design a product. All of these were fast paces, some 5 mins, some less, so you had to think quickly and not dwell over an idea and get something on paper. I have now used this technique throughout my rotation period.
This image used my signature to create a new MP3 player. This allowed me to have a different shape and think about the appropriate places for things. I designed the speaker in the 'O' of my name, the earphone wire at the end of the 'G' and the volume on the 'C'.
For this image we placed 10 different dots of the page and then joined them randomly up. Our task was then to create a 2 bedroom apartment from this shape. This idea was fun as you didn't know what your shape was going to end up as, however you could still make a functional product.
For this task we had to draw two shapes the same and create them into a pair of shoes. I drew two lightening bolts and created one side the base and one side the heel.
Water bottle
For this task we had to create a product that held a water bottle and was at least 30 cm off the ground. Our materials consisted of x1 A1 sheet of paper and an arms length of masking tape. At the beginning of this task I struggled as I was trying to work out a structure that would be sturdy enough to hold the water bottle, as well as meeting the height requirement. Although my end product didn't hold the water bottle it did hold it for a second, but I enjoyed using the small amount of materials to make something. To improve I could have planned better to make sure I had full use of my material as I still had paper left over, so I could have made a product that was better.
I started by cutting 3 squares to make the base of my water bottle holder. I used a triangle for my base as this was the strongest shape that I could think of. I made a slot in the paper so that the triangle slotted together to make the joints sturdy.
Here the triangle is connected, however I realised that the height was only 15cm.
To make the centre strong I rolled tubes with the paper and placed it in the triangular base to fill it out. I could have improved my planning by making all the tubes the same size. I chose to do tubes as then this met the height requirement and made the product have different shapes to make it look aesthetically pleasing and different.
Here is a birds eye view of my product from above. I taped all of my tubes together so that they didn't move about when you added something on them.
I quickly decorated my product however I could have made this look better. If I had decorated it before I constructed it, it would have been easier to do, although I ran out of time. I also added slips of paper at the joints to make sure they stayed.
My product holding pens!
I also managed to hold a pencil case on my holder which I was happy about.
Here is an image of the water bottle on my product. Although it stand for long it did for a second or so, highlighting that if my product was made out of sturdier material that it would have worked. However after this my product was crushed which shows it could have been improved.
