Exhibitions

The Future Is Here - Design Museum
24th July - 29th October

This exhibition was interesting as it showed you how the line between producer and consumer are becoming more faint as consumers can have more input into their products. Some consumers can choose colours/fabrics/ sizes of their products. This exhibition also showed recycle, reuse, renew products.

I really enjoyed this exhibition as the artist used a range of different media to produce her work, such as sculpture/paint/film/drawing etc. The yellow pictures were my favourite as each picture was different and effective. By changing one detail on all of the images, they had the same thing in common, however still being from different walks of life.

Graphics - Typhography

This day was my favourite day so far as all of the tasks that we were given I managed to create something that I was proud of. I have never done graphics before and I enjoyed creating the different fonts and posters.
First we had to create different fonts for the alphabet. I used some of my 3D work into this and made the 'M' stand off the page by layering 3 on top of each other.

I used a mixture of 2D and 3D drawings. I also used different colours to make the page more vibrant.

I tried out different fonts in the fill alphabet to see what they would look like, some in capital and some in lower case.

I chose this as my final font. I used a zig zag motion to create the text, and I like it as it had texture to it and it was still easy enough to read. I feel this was successful and I learnt that working quickly can be effective as you can make an accidental discovery that works.

I did some idea sketches to help me choose what I wanted to do. Then with my final idea I drew it in A3, the size I was working from, to give me and idea of what it would look like.

For our next task we had to create a poster that would best describes oureselves and jobs in 2033 in an exhibition. I chose the V&A museum for my exhibition places as that is where my favourite exhibitions have been held and my work would best fit in there. I chose to make a mannequin shape out of different fonts and words as this was what I had learnt over the week. I used tracing paper layered on top with certain words written on each one, so that some of the words were more blurred and faded that others, so that I could portray that the future isn't clear and we don't know what to expect. I used words that described me and things that I would like to do for a job. I used different and contrasting colours as well to make the poster stand out and interesting. My planning and quick sketches helped me conclude to this idea and shows that planning helps and idea work. I did adapt my idea as I went along however.

Graphics

For this task we did a series of drawings of peoples faces on our table. This task was helpful for me as we only had a short time to complete each one, however this taught me that the less time you have the better you work as you don't have time to think about it.

For our drawings we did one with our eyes shut, one holding our pen in our mouth, one with continuous line and not looking at the paper and one in our opposite hand. My best drawing was with my opposite hand, however my other images are abstract.

This was the wall of the collection of the class.

For this task we had to draw someones ear on an A1 sheet of paper. I struggles with this task as I find drawing body parts difficult however I got the main shape of the ear. I used charcoal so that I could get thin and thick strokes on my paper and smudge the lines to make them look more realistic.

For this task we had to create different faces, using a collection of newspaper cuttings from magazines/newspapers ect. I enjoyed this task as I like collage and some of the faces looked almost realistic. I feel my page was successful as I did a lot of different types of faces and used different expressions.

We then had to section a part of our work to recreate. I chose two different images from my collage as they both caught my eye as they looked realistic, as well as unique and obscure. I also chose images that had big eyes in them as I like drawing eyes and they caught my attention.

I chose this image to recreate.

This was my response. I created this with felt tip and water, to create a watercolour effect. The colours are bolder than the original colours to make the image more POP ART like. This was successful I think and it catches the eye.

3D spaghetti structure

For our final task on the 3D course we had to take all the things we had learnt and create one final structure out of 20 pieces of spaghetti with only a glue gun to hold the pieces together. To brainstorm ideas we drew different structures down that would hold 3 plastic balls off from the floor. Then we chose one drawing to create a real life structure. Throughout the week I learnt that I triangle is the strongest structure to hold something so I designed 4 different sizes structures in a like so that the plastic balls could sit in between the triangles. I chose to make the triangles different heights and sizes to make it visually appealing and abstract.

These were some of my designs for the spaghetti structure. I used a range of straight and curved lines to create my structure designs.

I started off by blue tacking my shapes together so that when I glued them I knew what went where.

My first triangle.

My next triangle was taller and slimmer to show a difference between the triangles.

I bound the joints together with the glue gun. This was hard to work with as the heat from the glue gun would make the spaghetti bend and snap, resulting in the task being tricky.

My structure coming together.

This was my final structure of 4 triangles in a line. Some of the triangles I had to put a strip of spaghetti in the middle as the width would be to wide and the plastic ball would fall through, but I managed to adjust this as I went along with my design.

This is my structure holding the three plastic balls in place. They are all a similar level which was interesting as I didn't intend for this to happen.

WRAPPING
For our next task we had to create an armour for our structure so that if something was dropped on it, it would survive. I created cones for my triangles as the point of the cone was solid enough to protect the structure. This again loosely related to the triangle structure.

I cut semicircles out of the paper provided and made a slit down the centre. Then I rolled to paper to create a cone and secured with prit stick.

This was the shape of my cones and I varied the size depending on the side of the triangle structure.

This was my structure with the armour ontop. Although it didn't look appealing the concept half worked when the basketball was dropped on top.

AFTER
This was my structure after the netball had been dropped on top of my structure. This proved that the triangle theory is correct and the my semicircle cones did prevent most of the damage to my structure.
Overall in this task I learnt that throughout the week my testing of different products can result in a product being  secure and strong. I was please with how this product looked and worked as it wasn't overly complicated but it was effective.

3D Paper bridge

Before our group task of building the bridge we had to create paper bridge models in 30mins. This was a task to think about how you could make a bridge look and how a structure could be successfully made.

For this bridge I created a square shape just as a basic structure. This was my first attempt at a bridge and I wouldn't have chosen to take this idea any further as it was boring and a triangle would have been a more suitable shape. Also I still needed to think about how people would get onto the bridge as I didn't finish this design. This could have been improved by making the bridge look more exciting.

For this idea I had a curve as the body of the bridge to show different levels and heights to the bridge. Also the ramp created a way for the people to get onto the bridge and this meant that I didn't need to make stairs or any other way for the people to get onto the bridge. The jaggered edged were for decoration and made the bridge have a dinosaur feel. I liked this idea as it looked creative and had a strong structure, however to improve it I could have added some legs under the bridge for extra support.

For this bridge I used a semicircle shape bade to give some cover to my bridge, which made this design different from the rest. I made stairs for the people to access the bridge and two stands for the bridges support. This bridge was very symmetrical in both sides. This bridge was constructed of simple shapes, all circular apart from the stairs and had a basic structure to it. This design seemed very safe however some of the elements of this bridge like the stands under the stairs were used in our final design as a group for out group bridge.

Overall these designs helped with the input of ideas as a group. We took certain elements such as the right hand side structure of the bridge as a ramp on either sides for the remote control car to get on to. We also took the flat surface as shown on the left hand side bridge so that the car could balance. This task was helpful in the creation of our final bridge as we could see what a mini size bridge version would look like and this allowed us to adapt our ideas and improve them.
